Iterio Degli-Eredi is a new postdoc from 25 September 2017 with Martijn Heck in the Electrical and Computer Engineering section. He received his M.Sc. degree in "Engineering Sciences: Photonics" at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in 2012. In his master thesis, he designed integrated silicon microdisk resonators capable of achieving efficient Raman-based all-optical wavelength conversion. During his PhD, which he started in 2012 at the Brussels Photonics (B-PHOT) research group of the VUB, he mainly focussed on the development of graphene-enhanced multilayer based biosensors but was also involved in the design and experimental characterization of integrated optics chips in the SOI, SiN and InP platforms. Currently, he is a postdoc at the Department of Engineering at Aarhus University, where he joined forces with his colleagues to develop low noise integrated microwave photonics oscillators. In his free time, he enjoys weightlifting and researching mechanical watches. Iterio will be working at Finlandsgade 22.

Lene Birksø Bødskov is our new secretary in the ENG Secretariat from September 1, 2017. Lene has been lent to us by ST Finance for one year to start with. Besides project economy, Lene also has experience as project secretary including project management and project administration from Department of Bioscience. Lene’s office will be at Navitas, and she will be the secretariat’s key employee in relation to CAE and ME.

Karthikeya Acharya (Karthik) is a new postdoc from 15 August 2017 with Peter Gall Krogh in the Civil and Architectural Engineering section. As a design researcher he focuses on doing energy research through design practice. He has a doctorate in Design from Aalto University in Helsinki, a master's degree in Interaction Design from Domus Academy+IDII program in Milan and a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Manipal University in India. He has gained industry experience working as a researcher with the Finnish state energy corporation and Nokia research centre as design researcher and also as a professional architect with design studios in South India. Karthikeya will be working at Navitas.

Lars Vabbersgaard Andersen is a new professor in the Civil and Architectural Engineering Section from 1 August 2017. His field of expertise is computational civil engineering with particular focus on dynamic soil-structure interaction, vibration and building acoustics. He has wide competence in constitutive modelling, computer programming, numerical methods, probabilistic analysis and also with experiments on small-scale models.

Lars has worked in depth with wave propagation in soil and structures, analyzed through different computational models, and he has also worked with soil-structure and soil-structure-soil interaction on high load and dynamic structures like wind turbine foundations, bridges, towers, etc.

José Luis Escalona is a new associate professor from 1 August 2017 in the Mechanical Engineering section. José will be working at Navitas.

Azra Becic Brka is a new project secretary from 1 August 2017 in the ENG secretariat. Azra has a background as a chemist from Aarhus University, specialising in organic biochemistry. She has used her background in both academia and administration.

Azra will take part in the operational tasks in the secretariat, but she will also support project leaders on specific projects – primarily in the biological-chemical area.

Azra’s office will be at Navitas, but she will come to our other locations when needed.

Alexandros Iosifidis is a new assistant professor from 1 August 2017 in the Electrical and Computer Engineering section. Alexandros will be working at Finlandsgade 22.

Marcelo Dias is a new assistant professor from 1 August 2017 in the Mechanical Engineering section. Marcelo will be working at Navitas.

Devarajan Ramanujan is a new Assistant Professor in the Design Research group from 1 August 2017. Devarajan is currently a postdoctoral research associate at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA. He is working with the Global Engineering and Research Laboratory on analysing the environmental and social sustainability of desalination and farm mechanisation systems in developing countries. Devarajan received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University, USA, in December 2015. His PhD research focused on creating design methods and computer-support tools for integrating environmental sustainability into the product design process.

Devarajan has over 20 peer-reviewed publications in conferences and journals, including the Journal of Mechanical Design, Computer-aided Design, Association for Computing Machinery Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, and Tangible, Embedded, and Embodied Interaction. He also has two patent applications on sustainability-based visualisation techniques in collaboration with TATA Innovation Labs, USA.  His work has received the best award in the American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME) International Design Engineering Technical Conference. He has taught courses on computer-aided design, rapid prototyping and product design, and has received the Estus H. and Vashti L. Magoon Award for Teaching Excellence from Purdue University’s College of Engineering.  

Devarajan’s current research focuses on creation of design support tools that aid environmentally and socially sustainable product design by studying the intersections between social, computer information processing, and product development systems.

Christian Nielsen will be joining us on 1 May 2017, extending our organisational support within industrial cooperation and tech innovations. He has a +10 years post-graduate experience in technology based business development, mostly in the areas of ICT and energy. Christian has worked as an R&D project manager for several years at the Alexandra Institute and, during the last 5 years, he has held a position as senior business development consultant and led a team of business developers at Insero.

During his career, Christian has gained experience in all phases of technology based innovation, from idea development over project formulation and realisation, to business acceleration and startup of businesses. Christian’s interest and focus has always been on both tech innovation and business development. Thus, he has extensive successful R&D fundraising experience, which he will use in this new position.

Andy Drysdale is a new Program Manager for our ENG Sustainable Energy Technology Program. Andy is quite experienced and comes with a +20 year track record in attracting and running research and innovation projects between industry and academia. He has previously been e.g. Head of Innovation at the Alexandra Institute and Director of Insero Business Services. The clear ambition is that he shall help us take the next strategic steps in accelerating our already steadily growing industrial cooperation in research and innovation. His responsibilities will not be limited to the energy field only. Andy will, from the start also take on the role as project manager for a new 25 mio. DKK innovation project on Smart Industry / Industry 4.0 that we have won from Region MidtJylland. Andy will formally start at ENG April 1, and be physically located at Navitas.

Susanne Pape Vestergaard is a new test assistant at Bygholm with Krister Persson from 16 January 2017.

Miroslaw Skibiewski  who joins the department on 1 January 2017 and is a new professor in Construction Information Technology and Automation in the Civil and Architectural Engineering section. He is a chaired professor of construction engineering and project management at Maryland University. He will continue his employment at Maryland University while being a part time professor at Aarhus University.

In his long career, Miroslaw has had a number of prominent scientific as well as administrative positions, among others as dean of international programmes at Purdue University, full time visiting professor at National University of Singapore, distinguished visiting professor at University of Technology Sydney, visiting chair professorship at Nanyang Technological University, and editor-in-chief in automation in construction (IF=2,4). Miroslaw has a large scientific production with more than 200 papers and a H-index of 34.

His research focuses on planning and design of construction through advanced ICT, robotics and automation. He has a very interdisciplinary research profile.

Miroslaw will be working at Navitas when he is at Aarhus University.

Ole Aalund Mandrup is leaving the Department of Engineering on 30 November 2016.

Zili Zhang is employed as assistant professor in the Civil and Architectural Engineering Section from 1 December 2016. For the last three years, Zili has been a postdoc at the department.

Zili’s research is related to structural dynamics, stochastic dynamics, vibration control, wind engineering, wind turbine aerodynamics and structural dynamics, aeroelastic stability of structures, modeling and control of wave energy convertors, and real-time hybrid testing. All of these topics merge nicely into the department and section strategy within civil engineering to focus on and to exploit opportunities related to structural dynamics, especially wind turbines. Zili will teach in random vibration, wave hydrodynamics and a new wind turbine course.

Anders Thyboe Lindhardt has been employed as an associate professor from 1 December 2016. Anders works with flow process technology in the Biological and Chemical Engineering section.

  • Tavs Nyord, who has been employed as senior advisor from 1/12 2016. Tavs Nyord will continue to chair the department's public sector consultancy committee and coordinate the department's tasks related the the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries. Tavs will help strengthen our research within emission from animal manure and technologies for limiting emission.
  • Peter Kai and Michael Jørgen Hansen, who have been employed as senior advisors from 1/12 2016. Peter and Michael Jørgen will work on public sector consultancy tasks and on other research tasks within emission.

The three senior advisors will join the Biological and Chemical Engineering section as part of the Air Quality Engineering research group.

Michael Dahl Knudsen has been employed as a postdoc from 1 November 2016. Michael works with indoor climate and energy in the Civil and Architectural Engineering section.

Domenico Zito who joins the Department of Engineering the 23 September 2016 as full professor within the Electrical and Computer Engineering section. He will be heading the research group on Wireless Transceivers. Domenico received the Laurea degree in electronic engineering in 2000 and his PhD degree in information engineering from University of Pisa, Italy in 2004.

Domenico is an internationally recognised expert in wireless transceiver design for emerging wireless applications. He is the author of more than 100 papers in peer-reviewed international journals and conference proceedings. He has established and led two research laboratories and has had responsibility for more than 25 international, national and industrial projects.

From 2009 to 2013 he was the national coordinator for Ireland of the European COST action on emerging wireless applications. Dominico is leading a European cluster on innovative contactless sensing systems for biomedical applications, and has received the first prize from the European Commission for the best practice in research and innovation in wireless technologies (1st of Europe’s top 3 innovators in wireless technology).

Domenico comes from a professor position at University College Cork (UCC) and Tyndall National Institute under the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Stokes Professorship Programme.

Domenico office will be working at Finlandsgade 22 in the Edison building.

          Kristian Løw is a new member of the department secretariat from 23 May 2016. Kristian has just finished his Master's degree programme in education science.           Anders Peter Adamsen has decided to leave the department at the end of May to pursue new challenges at SEGES. We are very sorry that Anders Peter will no longer be part of our department.           Keivan Ahmadi who holds a PhD degree from University of Waterloo, Canada from 2011.

          He has been a postdoctoral fellow at University of British Columbia, and has held positions at Pratt and Whitney Canada and University of Victoria.

          From 1 April 2016, Keivan will join the Section for Mechanics and Materials Engineering part time. His expertise is in dynamics of machining including a number of topics in dynamic instabilities such as chatter in drilling.

          Christos Georgakis who has joined the Department of Engineering on 1 April 2016. Christos is employed as a full professor and will be heading our research group on monitoring of structures in the Civil and Architectural Engineering section.

          Christos is an international expert in the field of structural monitoring and dynamics, and has a large international research network – among others with Stanford University. Christos’ research is related to monitoring and control. He has been focusing especially on cable bridges and wind turbines, and has experience in relevant topics such as wind load and structural response, operational modal analysis, icing of structures, FEM modelling, bridge design, etc.

          Aside from his academic merits, Christos has industrial experience and has worked on projects such as design-check of T5 at Heathrow and the Millennium Bridge in London. Also, he designed the Tuned Liquid Dampers Array for the 102 metres tall European Court of Justice in Luxemburg.

          Christos comes from a professorship at DTU, where he, very successfully, has lead a research project on wind-induced vibrations of bridge cables which was partially sponsored by Femern A/S.

          His office will be at Navitas, room 05.157. Christos is currently travelling abroad, but you can meet him from 25 April and onwards.

          Peter Würtz Vinther Tran-Jørgensen who will continue as a postdoc on 15 July 2016 after completing his PhD degree. He will continue to work for Peter Gorm Larsen in the Software engineering group (ECE) at Finlandsgade 22.

          René Damkjer who has joined the Department of Engineering on 1 April 2016. René Damkjer will be chair of our new Advanced Agricultural Technology Program. René has an extensive background within the agricultural and food domain as well as an impressive commercial business carrier in the domain. He has developed Agro Business Park in Foulum from 1995 to 2007 and has been the CEO of AgroTech from 2007 to 2013. Prior to that, he worked at the MAPP Centre at Aarhus Business of School and LMC at The Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University.

          Over the last two years, he has been part of the Nordic team creating the “hopefully” winning bit for the upcoming EU Food-KIC – a 1 billion Euro platform combining the food industry and academia in Europe. In addition, he is an evaluator of Innovation Networks at H2020 and vice-chair of the national InnoBooster program of the Innovation Fund Denmark. He has been involved in establishing several strategic platforms e.g. the BIO-VALUE-SPIR platform, the Future Food Innovation program in Central Denmark Region, InSPIRe-food and the innovation strategy for AgroTech as well as helping to establish several start-ups.

          As Chair of our Advanced Agricultural Technology Program, René will have the overall responsibility for growing the program into a setup in the European elite with high-tech agricultural technology. René holds a master degree in Dairy Engineering and Technology, an HD-O in organisation and Innovation and a Diploma in Service Innovation from CBS in Copenhagen.

          Privately he lives in Lystrup just outside Aarhus together with his wife and two daughters. His office will be at Hangøvej in our section for Biological and Chemical Engineering in office 2.25 and his e-mail is: rld@eng.au.dk.

          Timothy Robert Merritt who holds a PhD degree from Communications and New Media Dpt. National University of Singapore. He has been assistant professor at AAA since February 2012 and associate professor since March 2015. In addition, Timothy Merritt has more than 10 years of professional experience in IT consultancy at Siemens IT in the US. Timothy will join the department on 1 April 2016 and will be working in the Design research group at Navitas.

          Peter Gall Krogh who is a new professor MSO from 1 January 2016. Peter heads the new research group Design that focusses on industrial design and on the interface between technology, design and users across the research sections in the department. Peter has been a visiting professor at Politecnico di Milano and at TU/Eindhoven. Peter has experience with heading research projects primarily within the areas of social innovation, design, interaction and pervasive computing. Peter has left a position as professor at Aarhus School of Architecture where he was heading the reform platform. Peter will be working at Navitas.

          Kirsten Vang Nielsen

          From 1 November 2015, Kirsten Vang Nielsen is employed as Research Business Manager for our new initiative within Future Advanced Healthcare Technologies. She will help drive, strengthen and accelerate our existing activities within health technologies, enabling us to create a broader internationally competitive engineering research profile. She will, as soon as time allows it, work with our researchers from all four sections as they are already involved in the health domain. Kirsten will lead our new initiative on building a center for Future Advanced Healthcare Technologies.

          Kirsten has an impressive track-record from both industry and academia. She holds a master’s degree in cell biology and a PhD in clinical oncology. She has work experience from a governmental hospital and university laboratories as well as from a company working with cancer diagnostic products. In addition, Kirsten has experience as a project leader combining academic knowledge and business development to lead and direct cross-functional teams successfully during product development projects, being responsible for all parts of the process taking scientific ideas through product development to the final lunch of a product, including IPR protection and FDA approval.
